Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing benzyl alcohol as a preservative, used to dilute or dissolve medications for parenteral (injection) use. The benzyl alcohol prevents the growth of bacteria, allowing for repeated withdrawals from a single multiple-dose container without contamination. It is not for use with neonates, as the benzyl alcohol can be toxic to them.
Key Characteristics:
• Sterile: Free from microorganisms.
• Preservative: Contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol to inhibit bacterial growth.
• Multiple-Dose Container: Designed to be used multiple times by drawing out portions of the liquid.
Primary Use:
• Drug Diluent: Used to prepare injectable medications by mixing them with water.
